From the Hoop is a 3D Short directed by 3 students from Supinfocom Arles.

The story was inspired by the life of Earl Manigault, a basketball player who lost everything in drugs. Near the end of his life he dedicated his time to helping children of Harlem avoid the same fate. It was during this time that he started the “Walk Away From Drugs” tournament for kids. He died in 1998 from a heart failure.

The storyline in the actual film very non-linear and I think it is meant to be more of an abstract subjective interpretation of Manigault’s personal struggle with his inner-demons. It’s a beautiful little short though and the color and animation are really great for a student film. Impressive work. You can learn a little more about the project at the official website as well.

If my chemistry classes had been as exciting and entertaining as this short by Christopher Hendryx, I’d probably be in a different profession today.

“Oxygen,” created as Christopher’s thesis for the Computer Animation program at the Ringling College of Art & Design, tells the adventures (and frustrations) of little Oxygen trying to make friends at Element-ary school. It’s a lovely piece of storytelling, taking a dry and otherwise uninteresting subject and turning it into a funny and engaging narrative.

I’m loving the hilarious voice over. The animation is filled with little details (my favorite are the little electrons floating outside the characters), and the subtle sound design really gives the feeling of being back to school.

Who knew Oxygen could be such an outcast?

I was playing around with some AR markers the other day and came up with this idea. taking just a plain old vinyl record and attaching an AR marker to the label you can track the record in 3D space. The next question was, can you scratch the record?

So by figuring out the velocity of the records rotation and applying it to the payback of the audio you can scratch. There is some digital noise that needs to bee worked out, but sounds pretty good. Its still really hard to scratch, it takes some practice but is super fun. The next step is to figure out some nice triggers for different modes. I like the idea of not needing a turntable but the actual spinning of the record helps with the scratching and playback. I made a couple modes, one where the record is paused and you can just scratch through the song. The other looks for zero velocity for x time and then continues on with the song. If there is velocity you then are scratching and the audio is affected. I think that this project has some legs can’t wait to play more.

Armed with HD cameras we’ll be heading out in search of some of the best riding North America has to offer. Beginning on May 16th, 2009 we will be touring eastern cities, starting in Toronto then heading to Montreal and finally arriving in the Big Apple. We aim to reveal the riding and culture that exists within each one of these amazing cities. Filming is also underway in Vancouver where the locals have been pushing hard to lay down some of the best lines ever seen on a fixed gear. The thing about Supinfocom films that resonates is their consistent attention to detail through all aspects of production. There is an obvious thought and care given to every layer of their films from story, to character development, environments, etc.

However, what really makes this film for me is the lighting, art direction and cinematography. For the majority of shots, there is a maturity in the movement of the camera and dramatic use of lighting that is often lacking in student films. Much of this happened in the final composites, but there is definitely a cinematic intuition in the early concept art and photographic research

Mr. Hudson’s blue eyed soulful crooning found a spot onto Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreak album and a coveted spot on the record label. For those unfamiliar with the UK singer, one listen to his song and video entitled “There Will Be Tears” and you will instantly understand what Kanye sees, and hears, in Hudson. The strength of the song lies in its melancholy beauty, layered auto tune vocals and a slight electronic flair. The tune sounds like it would have fit perfectly on Kanye’s last album. However, Hudson’s own image and personality comes through in a equally entertaining video directed by Nabil.

The show “Duality” opened at Ad Hoc Art in Bushwick last weekend, marking the first East Coast show for a pair of emerging L.A.-based artists: Ekundayo and Joshua Clay.

Ekundayo’s anthropomorphic malformations bear a curious semblance root vegetables such as ginger, potatoes or parsnips. Yet these fiends could just as well be creating themselves despite their gnarled despondency, as they could be unraveling before our eyes; many of them cling to each other or themselves with a childlike tenderness as they alternately writhe and meditate.

If Ekundayo succeeds in balancing careful, tautly-rendered classicism and the stylization of contemporary street art, Clay decidedly leans towards the latter aesthetic. While Ekundayo’s figures are simultaneously fleshy and emaciated, Clay’s women, in particular, are uniformly anemic and doll-like. Indeed, his angular, fanciful variations on warriors– from ninjas and pirates to bears and tigers– appear animated but lack the visceral vitality of Ekundayo’s creatures.

Similarly, the exaggerated sense of mischievousness makes Clay’s work look cartoonish, for better or worse, opposite Ekundayo’s compellingly grotesque bestiary.

Although the title “Duality” captures the contrast only through the vagueness of the term, we can certainly expect great things to come from both artists. The show is well worth the hike out to Bushwick; the gallery is a short block and a half from the Morgan Ave stop on the L train.

For his master thesis at Arts et Technologies de l’Image, Mathieu Gérard created “Steel Life,” a breathtaking tapestry of textures and light that evokes themes of genesis and rebirth.

While there’s no obvious narrative, the film uses abstract realism—lovingly rendered imagery inspired by nature—to build an associative network of ideas. The lush soundtrack, composed by Mathieu Alvado and performed by the Star Pop Orchestra, adds a dramatic arc to the film.

Getting older is a fact of life and something we have to come to terms with. Your face starts to show signs of age, you don't rebound as quick from a hard fall, daily pains seem to be common place, and the list goes on. Which leads me to ask the question of is snowboarding really a young persons sport?

I look at the list of pro's that inspired me to ride and most have gone on to other things outside of snowboarding, while a few still remain. It's undeniable that when you're riding at that caliber that your body gets hammered hard. Every year you hear about so and so is the new ______ and then a year after that where are they? More than likely eaten up and spit out.

Kids in this day and age have more benefits than ever for progression. Snowboard camps, woodward, trampoline camps, better equipment, and the list goes on. To be young and have 0 responsibilities with those options is amazing.

Lately it seems though that there's a trend of older riders still killing it. Guys that are past what some consider their prime. You look and Todd Richards, JP Walker, Peter Line are all still killing it. These are guys that have proven themselves over and over but still keep on riding and doing it strong. It's just funny to see how many companies now are keeping riders around that are well aged compared to ones that are wet behind the ears. Is it a part of a mentoring program? I don't know.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - April 1, 2009-Chicago, IL - Harpo Inc. in collaboration with Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum are very proud to announce a partnership in buying out Intrawest ULC from the Fortress Investment Group LLC (NYSE FIG).

The partnership of Oprah Winfrey and Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum came to fruition in the fall of 2006 when they became neighbors in the country of Dubai. Upon seeing the success of the Dubai Snow Dome the two parties looked into how mutually beneficial owning a ski resort could be for the under priviledged.

With the Woodward at Copper facility launching this summer Oprah has personally contacted The National Brotherhood of Skiers to help them with training for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. The goal of this partnership is to have a gold medal sweep not only for the United States but for African American's in winter sports.

When asked about his part in this deal al-Maktoum said, "I spent 2.4 million on a camel what is 240 million on a few ski resorts!"

The deal which will be finalized at midnight was for the total of 480 million dollars. Ownership will change hands after the snow season has ended.

Even the big B isn't immune to this economy. Yesterday they issued a press release stating that they were laying off 5% of their work force in North America and cutting back pay. No real big surprises here at all, seems fairly on par with what everyone else is going through.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (March 25, 2009) — Burton today announced that due to the challenging global economic situation, the company must cut its annual spending by reducing salaries in North America from the top down and laying off a small percentage of its North American staff. Burton is the world’s leading snowboard company and owns other top boardsports brands, including Channel Islands Surfboards, DNA Distribution (Alien Workshop and Habitat Skateboards), Analog, Gravis, ANON and R.E.D.

“This has been a very painful process for us, and considering the global economic situation, we’ve done everything in our power to save as many jobs as possible,” says Burton CEO Laurent Potdevin. “Our goal this entire year has been to cut as many costs as possible on a global level, like sales meetings, travel and new hires so that we could avoid cutting people. Instead of a much larger number of layoffs, we decided to take a different approach, which is temporarily reducing salaries on a sliding scale from 0-15% for employees in North America.”

Burton owners Jake and Donna Carpenter have chosen to eliminate their own salaries. Burton employees who have the highest salaries will face the biggest percentage of pay cuts, while employees who make less will experience smaller cuts. In order to save even more jobs, Burton has cancelled all bonuses and merit increases for North America this year and temporarily reduced the company’s 401K match from 4% to 1%.

In addition to salary reductions, Burton laid off less than 5% of its staff in North America, bringing the company’s total headcount in North America to 663. After staff reductions, Burton currently employs 418 employees at its headquarters and factory in Vermont, 17 employees at DNA Distribution in Ohio and 154 employees at its California offices. Globally, Burton employs 962 people.
